Akash crowned champion in six-red snooker tournament

Akash Mohapatra emerged champion in the 1st All Odisha Open Six-Red Snooker Tournament, defeating Soubhagya Behera in the final by 7-3 frames here at Vintage Club today. This was the maiden title for Akash, who won the best-of-13-frame finalĀ  41-4, 38-17, 48-34, 30-33, 26-4, 11-40, 61-0, 22-25, 30-17, 45-0.

Earlier in the semifinals, Akash beat Rakesh Roshan Pradhan, while Soubhagya upset Nishant Biswal by 6-5 identical frames. Around 40 cueist from across the state participated in the league-cum-knockout tournament, which commenced on July 24.

Players were placed in eight groups and after completion of group league matches, top two from each group advanced to the knock-out (pre-quarterfinals) stage. Organised by Vintage Club, the tournament carried a total cash prize of Rs 27,000, including Rs 10,000 for the champion.

The runner-up received Rs 5,000, loosing semifinalists Rs 2,000 each, loosing quarterfinalists Rs 1,000 each and loosing pre-quarterfinalists Rs 500 each. Trophy and cash prizes were distributed in the presence of Vintage Club wwner Amiya Nayak, organising commeette members and senior players of the state.
